SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Drivers on Windows 7
I've been upgrading a few of our PCs and Laptops with Windows 7 this evening and hit upon a problem with the SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio device that came with my Dell XPS M1330 laptop. A quick google confirmed I wasn't the only one having problems.
Since I have now solved the problem I thought I'd post it here on my blog as I'm sure it will be a popular search on Google in the coming months as the masses move to the new OS.
The symptom
Following a fresh install of Windows 7 (I haven't tried an in place upgrade) the Operating System sees the Sigmatel device and reports it to be working, but the sound just doesn't work. Any attempt to download and install the latest Vista drivers also fails to cure the issue.
The fix
- Download the latest x32 or x64 (as appropriate for your computer) Vista driver from the Dell website and leave the EXE in a folder somewhere. Or get them direct from us, click for the 32 bit driver or for the 64 bit driver
- Right click computer, and choose manage, then device manager
- In the Sound, Video and Game controller group you will see a device called "Windows High Defintion". Delete this by selecting and pressing delete
- Now having removed this device from your system you should run the Dell Sigmatel Driver EXE you downloaded previously
- Your system will prompt for a restart upon install
- When you restart you will get the reassuring sound of the Windows 7 start up tune and all will now be well !
Hope this helps someone, took me an hour today to figure it out.

Thanks again
I think the trick is not to restart once you have deleted the HD device. Install the Vista drivers once you have deleted it, then restart - see if that helps ?
Do you have driver (or link) for Network card too (Win7)? It's also missing :(
Yeah, you are RIGHT!!
I installed driver from above, but have similar problem with XPS M1530: headphones are working, but recording with line/mic jack is not working. Did you solve this?
Thanks again
Cwumbs
I uninstalled old driver and installed the new driver and restarted. it works now.
Thanks again
"ExitError.Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again."
Any advice?
The same happened to me. I'm running on a Dell Inspiron 1525. BOTH of my headphone jacks haven't worked for a year.
Please help?
Any suggestions on what I could do?
Fixed the external microphone (jack wired) not working (for Skype)
Dell XPS M1210 - Windows 7 Ultimate x32
Used : SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio A096.10.0.5614 for Vista x32 & x64 on Dell M1210
R171788.exe
Otherwise, You'll get horrible microphone (in Skype and in other apps too).
For web based flash app recordings right click on flash, choose setting, gi to mic settings and choose reduce echo.
IT WORKS PERFECT FOR DELL VOSTRO 1400.
I ALMOST GAVE UP HOPE...

Have the same issue. But running Windows 8. Have sound but has abit if issues with some progs. Some 1 more tried this with Win8
Just uninstall
1. "Audio inputs and outputs" & "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Manually try to install Sigmatel Vista driver. (this step failed for me, twice)
3. Restart computer (Restart again if prompted) and voilá: it actually worked
I used DELL XPS M1330, then installed Win 7 SP 1 Pro 32 bit. So, the sound didn't come out, came out only when I used headphones. Then I tried the steps you gave, and it sounds! I'm so relieved, cause I thought it would be hardware problems...

My solution was to use a USB mic. No extra software or driver installs required. You just need to set the USB mic as default in Contol Panel/Sound/Recording and you may also have to select the USB mic as the audio source in the application program settings when using the webcam, Skype, etc.
