SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Drivers on Windows 7

I've been upgrading a few of our PCs and Laptops with Windows 7 this evening and hit upon a problem with the SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio device that came with my Dell XPS M1330 laptop. A quick google confirmed I wasn't the only one having problems.

Since I have now solved the problem I thought I'd post it here on my blog as I'm sure it will be a popular search on Google in the coming months as the masses move to the new OS.

The symptom

Following a fresh install of Windows 7 (I haven't tried an in place upgrade as I just don't trust 'em !) the OS sees the Sigmatel device and reports it to be working, but the sound just doesn't work. Any attempt to download and install the latest Vista drivers also fails to cure the issue.

The fix

Download the latest x32 or x64 (as appropriate for your computer) Vista driver from the Dell website and leave the EXE in a folder somewhere
Or get them direct from us, click for the 32 bit driver or for the 64 bit driver
Right click computer, and choose manage, then device manager
In the Sound, Video and Game controller group you will see a device called "Windows High Defintion" - delete this by selecting and pressing delete
Now having removed this device from your system you should run the Dell Sigmatel Driver EXE you downloaded previously
Your system will prompt for a restart upon install
When you restart you will get the reassuring sound of the Windows 7 start up tune and all will now be well !

Hope this helps someone, took me an hour today to figure it out.

I tried this but it didnt work. I tried to delete the High Definition Audio Device from the Device manager and the system required restart - OK. After restart the plug and play installed the driver itself, so I did not have a possibility to force any other installation. So headphones, microphone, etc everything works apart from the laptop speakers...

I think the trick is not to restart once you have deleted the HD device. Install the Vista drivers once you have deleted it, then restart - see if that helps ?

This worked flawlessly on a Dell Inspiron 1420 running windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit. My issue was the sound drivers were using the default windows drivers, the sound was only working on the headsets and not on the main speakers. Thank you, i appreciate this solution!

Thank you so much for your information. Finally, i was being able to have my laptop XPS M1330 sound back normal under window 7. One more step i had to go through is disable enhancements after installed the driver. Hope this helps for others.

Didn't work for me (Dell XPS M1530). It worked at first, but after a few days, after doing some minor changes to the microphone settings, both microphone and speakers stopped working. Despite both devices looking to be working fine, Sound Recorder reported no recording device found.

I installed driver from above, but have similar problem with XPS M1530: headphones are working, but recording with line/mic jack is not working. Did you solve this?

Thanks a million! I had upgraded my Inspiron E1505 to Windows Seven 64Bit and just the speakers and headphone jack worked. The microphone would not until I found your page and installed the 64Bit driver! Thanks!

When I go into my device manager I don't have a device called "Windows High Definition". I have an "Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI" and a "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC". Is the Intel one what I ought to delete?

Oh, and one other thing. I don't have an option to delete. Instead I can only uninstall. Will that amount to the same thing, or will I still have residual registry files if I only uninstall it?

I did exactly stated above, but when I try to install the driver, it gives me this error.

"ExitError.Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again."

Any advice?

The same happened to me. I'm running on a Dell Inspiron 1525. BOTH of my headphone jacks haven't worked for a year.

Please help?

Okay, so I've got Sigmatel working on my laptop again (Dell Inspiron 1525), however, both the headphone jacks are still not working and sound comes out of the speakers even when I plug my headphones in.

Any suggestions on what I could do?

Try going into "Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Sound | Manage Audio Devices" and change your preferred "Playback" and "Recording " tabs by selecting the other device (if you have another one listed) and going back to clear the other selection. If not, roll back the driver and manually install it from Device Manager . From what I remember, the .exe file would extract the driver, then I had to manually update it to get it to work. It sometimes does not load the "microphone" component and fails to recognize a microphone input, but the speakers and headphone jacks work fine ever since I installed this driver.
